Forestry
Much of our property contains Virginia pine, which is usually a product of neglect, is poor habitat, and can also be a fire hazard. The Stokes County and NC Forestry Service have come by to help us better manage our forest. They have initiated a long term plan which will eventually create a more healthy environment and ecosystem, but we have to actually cut down some trees in the process. As the Forestry, service said, “If you want to bake a cake, first you have to break a few eggs.” Their solution is to harvest much of the current Virgina pine and then to reforest with Shortleaf pine. They have also given us information on other habitat improvements we can make such as introducing native warm season grasses to some of our pastures. Please stay tuned, but also please pardon the occasional mess!
